Input Devices

Input devices allow you to input information into the computer and include things like the keyboard and mouse.

Keyboard
The keyboard allows you to type information into the computer. It has evolved over the years. The keyboard is built into the laptop computer but is a separate item when used with a desktop computer. They can be connected via cable or can be wireless.

Mouse
When using an operating system such as Microsoft Windows, you use the mouse to select drop-down menus, point and click items, select items, and drag and drop items from one place to another.

Scanner
A scanner allows you to scan printed material and convert it into a file format that can be used within a PC. You can scan images and then manipulate them inside the PC using your favorite graphics application. Also, you can scan printed text and convert it not only into images of text but actual text that can be manipulated and edited as text within your word-processor. There are many specialist programs, commonly called OCR (Optical Character Recognition) programs that are specifically designed to convert printed text into editable text within your application.

Tracker ball
A tracker ball is an alternative to the traditional mouse and the choice of graphic designers. Tracker balls often give much finer control over the movement of items on the screen. If you're used to traditional mice, they may take some getting used to, but offer a lot in terms of added flexibility.

Joystick
Many games require a joystick for proper play. There are many different types, more sophisticated responses to movement in 3 axis directions, as well as many configurable buttons. As with most things in life you get what you pay for with joysticks and it's well worth the investment,Solidly built model, especially keep in mind that children will hammer these devices while playing games.

Web cam
Since its invention, the web has become increasingly interactive. You can now use a small digital movie camera (a web cam) mounted on a PC monitor to allow not only text communication but also audio and video communication as well as two-way communication. While not yet considered a standard piece of PC kit, it's only a matter of time.

Digital camera
A digital camera can be used in the same way as a traditional camera, but instead of storing images on rolls of film, which require development, the images are stored digitally in the memory held within the camera. These images can easily be transferred to your computer and then manipulated within any graphics program you have installed on your computer. Currently they are limited by the quality of recorded images and the number of images you can store

Microphone
Early voice recognition systems produced very poor results due to software limitations combined with hardware limitations. Converting the spoken words displayed on the screen to text requires a lot of CPU processing power. But things are changing fast and the latest systems allow you to talk to a PC and see text on the screen. Most of these systems require an initial training period, where you train the software to respond to your specific voice. Although not yet perfect it is a key technology of the future.

Output Devices

Flat screen computer screen
Fat screen computer screen found. They take up much less space on a desk and use less power than traditional, heavier monitors. You should be aware that often if you specify a screen of a certain size, say a 17 inch screen, it is measured diagonally, not horizontally across the screen. If you are upgrading you should ask for the "visible viewing area" of the screen.

Projection device
These are projection devices that can be connected to your computer and are useful for showing presentations to a group of people.  They are used in education and are also very popular for sales presentations. Recently the prices of these devices have come down dramatically. (Two things to look out for when buying one of these devices are resolution (go for XGA at least) and lamp brightness (the brighter the better). Other factors to be aware of are the silence (or otherwise) of the device, as well as replacement bulbs. consumption.

Speakers and headphone
Most computers are sold with the ability to add a pair of speakers to your system unit. In fact, in some cases, the computer screen may have speakers built right into the unit. It enhances the value of educational and presentation products and can now be considered as an ideal PC component. Most computers allow you to plug headphones into one of the computer sockets. This is useful because the sound will then not disturb others in the room.

Speech synthesizer
A recent development is the ability not only to display text on the monitor, but also to have the text read to you. That way, you can receive a text email from a colleague and have the system read that email to you. This is of great benefit to the visually impaired while using a computer. On the other hand, it is now possible to use a microphone to speak to a computer and for the computer to convert the spoken word directly into text that will be displayed in your word-processor. While these systems are far from fool proof, they are getting better as more advanced software becomes available.

Printer
Most of the data is printed after you create it, and there are a large number of different printers available to accomplish this. The most common are ink jet and laser printers, both of which can now produce color output (at a cost).

Different types of printers
There are different types of printers. In large organizations, laser printers are commonly used because they can print very quickly and produce very high quality output.) In most organizations, printers are connected to computers through a network. This means that not everyone with a computer needs their own printer. Each computer connected to the network can print using a specific shared printer. When you buy a printer, one of the things that sellers don't necessarily stress is how much it will cost to keep the printer running. Laser printers do not use ink; They use something called toner which is usually supplied in a sealed unit called a toner cartridge) Each toner cartridge will allow you to print a certain amount of pages and needs to be replaced when the toner is used up. In some cases, the cost of these toner cartridges is very high. Ink jet printers can also be more expensive to run.

Laser printer
Laser printers produce high print quality at high speeds. They are called "laser printers" because they have a small laser inside them. There is a wide range of laser printer manufacturers and one of the buzzwords is PostScript, a type of printer designed for very high quality reproduction of images.

Color laser printer
Basically, most laser printers will only print in black and white (mono). More recently color laser printers have come down in price and are coming into widespread use. While many of these produce excellent results, you should be aware of the fact that the "cost per page", especially if you use a lot of color on a page, can be very high compared to the cost of printing in black and white.

Inkjet printer
Inkjet printers work by using small jets to spray ink onto paper. Inkjet printers are very quiet to operate and produce print quality comparable to laser printers, although laser printers still have the edge in terms of speed. Inkjet printers are ideal for low volume printing where high quality printing is required and speed is not a high priority, eg, printing letters in a small office or home.
Dot matrix printer
Dot matrix printers work by firing a row of pins through an ink ribbon onto paper. The more pins the print head has the better the print quality, most modern dot matrix printers have 24 pins. Unfortunately, dot matrix printers can produce a lot of noise and do not produce very high quality prints, especially when printing graphics. As a result, inkjet printers have now largely replaced dot matrix printers. (Dot matrix printers are used for high volume / low quality printing, such as pay slips for printing companies.)
